Gun Owners of America Supports Campus Carry Bill
SB 354 Allows students, staff and faculty to carry concealed handguns on campuses of higher education.
A bill introduced in the Texas Senate would allow law-abiding students, staff and faculty who have a valid Concealed Handgun License (CHL), to carry their handguns on college and university campuses.
The bill’s author, Senator Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio) was quoted in the Richland Chronicle to say, “I don't ever want to see repeated on a Texas college campus what happened at Virginia Tech where some deranged, suicidal madman goes into a building and is able to pick off totally defenseless kids like sitting ducks.” This legislation is intended to prevent gun violence in schools.
"Gun-free zones are shooting galleries for the mass murderers," a student at Texas A&M told AP News. "We do not feel that we must rely on the police or security forces to defend our lives."
"The Virginia shooter was mentally deranged. The people who would be able to carry weapons on campus, if this passes, would be licensed, and therefore fully trained," he said. "To get a license in Texas, you have to be 21, go through a 10-hour course and pass an exam, and go out on a shooting range with a handgun and pass a test. One would have to undergo a criminal background check and pay a fee of more than $100,” Senator Wentworth said to CNN. "People do not lightly apply for licenses," he said. "We would have responsible, trained people there in the classroom."
Opponents of concealed carry argue that more guns equal more blood in the streets, but study after study continues to prove that this isn’t true. Honest people are not the cause of crime and violence, they are the solution. We all know that criminals, by definition, don’t obey gun laws anyway.
The following Senators are members of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee. Please contact the members of the Committee and urge them to support SB 354. It’s important that the legislators hear that Second Amendment supporters will back them in this effort.
